Today, U.S. Representative John Garamendi expressed strong opposition to plans by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). He emphasized the importance of USAID's role in global humanitarian efforts.
Garamendi stated, “During our years of service, my wife Patti and I have witnessed the heartbreaking sight of children suffering from hunger and preventable diseases. Anyone who has witnessed this suffering like us has an indelible mark on their hearts that lasts forever."
He criticized Trump and Musk’s intentions as "illegal and unconstitutional," asserting that they demonstrate a focus on power rather than understanding the impact on affected individuals. According to Garamendi, USAID is vital in delivering essential services such as HIV/AIDS medical treatments via PEPFAR, food distribution during starvation crises, and aiding those fighting infectious diseases in conflict zones.
“It is particularly painful to witness Trump and Musk’s efforts to undermine these vital services for the most vulnerable,” he continued. Garamendi argued that redirecting funds from USAID initiatives would negatively affect innocent children while benefiting wealthy individuals through tax breaks.
Garamendi stressed that Elon Musk lacks the authority to dissolve USAID, stating, “Elon Musk did not create USAID; Congress did. He has no right to USAID’s information, let alone to dissolve it.” He urged that any governmental changes must be conducted with accountability and prioritize humanity over business interests.
Concluding his statement, Garamendi called on colleagues to defend constitutional values and maintain America’s commitment to foreign assistance as a moral duty: “Foreign assistance isn’t just a policy, it’s a moral responsibility.”
