California DMV urges residents to obtain REAL IDs before May deadline

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has reported that over 18.5 million residents have obtained a REAL ID as of January 1, 2025. This figure reflects an increase of 118,056 from the previous month and indicates that more than 1.6 million Californians upgraded to a REAL ID in 2024.

With the federal enforcement date approaching on May 7, 2025, the DMV is encouraging residents to secure their REAL ID or another federally approved document. This will be necessary for domestic air travel and access to secure federal facilities. DMV Director Steve Gordon emphasized the importance of acting promptly: “Now is the time to get your REAL ID,” he stated, suggesting it allows individuals to focus on their plans for the year ahead.

Californians can begin their application process by visiting REALID.dmv.ca.gov. The online platform allows applicants to fill out forms and upload required documents before visiting a DMV office to complete the process. This approach is designed to minimize time spent at DMV offices, potentially reducing visits to about 15 minutes.

Applicants need to provide proof of identity with one original or certified document, two proofs of California residency in paper form, and a Social Security number (with some exceptions). Further details and document requirements are available on the official website.

The historical data shows an upward trend in REAL ID adoption: from 16,870,178 cardholders at the start of 2024 to over 18.5 million by early January this year.

To facilitate various transactions without requiring an office visit, the DMV has expanded its digital services. Most tasks can now be completed online or through other service channels, including renewals for driver's licenses and vehicle registrations. Customers are also encouraged to use the Service Advisor tool on the DMV website for guidance on completing specific tasks.

Additionally, Californians can opt into paperless notifications for vehicle registration and driver’s license renewals by creating a secure account at dmv.ca.gov.
