Rep. John Garamendi of California has issued a statement in response to President Donald Trump's directive for federal agencies to halt spending on financial assistance and grants. This decision, according to Garamendi, affects nearly $3 trillion in federal aid.
Garamendi criticized the move as "a reckless and unconstitutional act that punishes American families." He emphasized that the Constitution grants Congress authority over federal spending and accused Trump of ignoring this principle. The congressman expressed concern about the potential impacts on various sectors, including emergency services, education, medical services, food banks, and veterans' assistance.
He warned that Trump's order could halt construction projects vital for infrastructure improvements and risk hundreds of jobs. Garamendi also challenged claims from the Trump administration regarding the temporary nature of this pause and its purported focus on family welfare.
"Millions of American children will not receive their school lunches because of Trump’s federal freeze," he stated. Garamendi called for an immediate reversal of the decision to restore stability and return taxpayer money to citizens.
