Governor Gavin Newsom recently met with firefighters who have been actively battling the Los Angeles firestorms. These fires, which started amid historic hurricane-force winds, have prompted a significant response effort in Southern California. Governor Newsom expressed his gratitude to the firefighters from CAL FIRE and the Pasadena Fire Department for their dedication in fighting these blazes.
"My deepest appreciation goes to the men and women on the frontlines that continue to protect our communities," stated Governor Newsom. He acknowledged the intense conditions faced by those combating fires across thousands of acres.
The state has mobilized resources extensively, with CAL FIRE and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services pre-positioning personnel and equipment ahead of expected rapid fire spread. On January 7, major fires like the Palisades and Eaton fires erupted, driven by 100 mph winds.
"In my 34 years as a firefighter, I have never seen fire conditions in January like those we experienced," said CAL FIRE Director Chief Joe Tyler. Sean Katt from Pasadena Fire Department also noted unprecedented wind speeds during the Eaton Fire.
Over 16,000 personnel were involved at peak times in fighting these wildfires. The efforts included more than 2,000 pieces of firefighting equipment such as engines, aircraft, dozers, and water tenders. The Governor also deployed California Highway Patrol Special Response Teams and activated over 2,500 National Guard members to support operations and prevent looting.
As recovery begins, specialized debris flow teams have been deployed ahead of wet weather conditions. A $2.5 billion relief package was signed to aid Los Angeles' rebuilding efforts. Executive orders have been issued to provide tax relief and streamline rebuilding processes while protecting survivors from price gouging.
For those affected by the firestorms in Los Angeles County, resources are available through CA.gov/LAfires or by applying for disaster assistance online or via FEMA's contact options.
