Ryan K. Buchanan, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie, Jr. has taken over as the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, following Ryan K. Buchanan's departure. This transition became effective on January 20, 2024, at midnight, in accordance with the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.
Ryan K. Buchanan expressed confidence in his successor, stating: “Richard S. Moultrie, Jr. is an accomplished trial lawyer and a career prosecutor who lives the mission of the Department of Justice.” He also highlighted Moultrie's leadership qualities and his commitment to public service: “He is a capable and experienced leader who has the trust and faith of the public servants of the United States Attorney’s Office, our law enforcement partners, and our community stakeholders.”
In response to his new role, Mr. Moultrie said: “It has been an incredible privilege to work side-by-side with U.S. Attorney Buchanan as the District’s First Assistant U.S. Attorney.” He emphasized his dedication to continuing their mission: “Along with the dedicated and talented attorney, administrative, and legal support staff of our office, I will steadfastly continue our District’s mission to prosecute federal crimes."
Mr. Moultrie brings a wealth of experience from handling complex cases in federal court and previously led the Violent Crime & National Security Section within the office. His accolades include membership in the American College of Trial Lawyers and awards such as the U.S. Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award.
He holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from Morehouse College.
