Representatives John Garamendi, Mark DeSaulnier, Jared Huffman, Kevin Mullin, Debbie Dingell, and Brian Fitzpatrick have introduced bipartisan legislation to create a commemorative coin honoring women who contributed to the World War II Home Front. This initiative coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California.
The proposed "Rosie the Riveter Commemorative Coin Act" aims to design coins that reflect the diversity of the WWII workforce. Proceeds from these coins will fund maintenance and educational programs at the historical park.
"This bill is a key step honoring millions of women for selflessly supporting the wartime effort during World War II," said Rep. Garamendi. He emphasized that these coins would remind people of women's contributions and empowerment during that era.
Sarah Pritchard, Executive Director of Rosie the Riveter Trust, expressed support for this recognition: "These women shaped the outcome of World War II and laid the foundation for today’s workforce diversity and equity."
Rep. Huffman highlighted their heroism: “During World War II, ‘Rosie the Riveters’ answered the call to support the war effort by taking on new roles.”
Rep. Mullin praised their courage: "Throughout World War II, millions of women stepped up with courage and resilience to support their country."
Rep. Fitzpatrick noted his ongoing efforts: “Since entering Congress, I have made it a mission to fight for...recognition our nation's Rosie the Riveters have rightfully deserved.”
Rep. Dingell celebrated their impact: “Rosies are true trailblazers...America will forever be changed for better thanks to their ‘can do’ spirit.”
Congressman DeSaulnier remarked on their legacy: “For these immeasurable and indelible contributions...I am proud to join my colleagues in offering legislation that would create a series of commemorative coins."
The percentage of women in the workforce increased significantly during WWII as they took on roles traditionally held by men.
In April 2024, Congress awarded Rosie the Riveter with a Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of all women who supported American war efforts during WWII.
