Governor Gavin Newsom has officially declared January 15, 2025, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in California. The proclamation emphasizes the ongoing relevance of Dr. King's message to stand against injustice and uphold democratic principles.
"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s call to stand up against injustice and protect the most sacred tenets of democracy still rings true today more than 50 years after his passing," Governor Newsom stated in the proclamation. He highlighted Dr. King's influence as a civil rights leader who inspired a generation of activists and transformed America's self-perception.
The governor acknowledged that while progress has been made, Dr. King's vision is not yet fully realized. He emphasized California's commitment to addressing persistent challenges faced by African Americans and ensuring equal opportunities for all residents of the state.
"California is working to address long-standing challenges and barriers that many African Americans still face, ensuring everyone has the chance to pursue the California Dream," Newsom noted.
The proclamation serves as a reminder of Dr. King's legacy and calls for unity in promoting justice and expanding opportunities for future generations.
The document was signed by Governor Newsom and attested by Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., Secretary of State.
