NYC woman sues junk removal firm over missing $100K jewelry

Susan Nussbaum, a New York City resident, has filed a lawsuit against 1-800-GOT-JUNK, alleging that the company's employees stole a safe containing approximately $100,000 worth of jewelry during a move. The lawsuit was filed in Manhattan Supreme Court earlier this month.

Nussbaum contacted the junk removal service to dispose of several pieces of furniture as she moved between apartments on the Upper West Side. She paid $412 for the removal of a bed, bookshelf, and wall unit with cabinets. However, she claims that within this wall unit was a safe filled with valuable jewelry and family keepsakes.

According to Nussbaum's account, the safe was too heavy for her to remove herself. She intended to ask the movers for assistance but forgot amid the chaos of moving. Surveillance footage reportedly shows movers wheeling away the wall unit with the safe still inside.

After realizing her mistake while visiting a nearby store, Nussbaum attempted to contact 1-800-GOT-JUNK immediately but claims she received no help from their customer service team. "I was frantic," she said about her attempts to retrieve the safe.

Nussbaum’s lawyer, Scott Wolinetz, stated in legal documents that "the customer service team was incapable of discerning the severity of the situation" and accused them of misappropriating her belongings through "fraudulent and deceptive means."

Evan Cohen, area director for 1-800-GOT-JUNK, responded by saying that they had taken photos before and after removing items to confirm pricing and space usage in their truck. However, he did not provide these images when requested by The Post.

Cohen noted that Nussbaum signed paperwork indicating satisfaction with their service and relinquishing ownership of removed items. He added that an internal inquiry found staff followed standard procedures and denied seeing or handling any safe.

Despite hiring a private investigator who confirmed that Nussbaum made her first call shortly after the truck left for The Bronx junkyard A.J. Recycling at 4:26 PM — while it remained there until at least 4:35 PM — efforts have failed so far in locating either missing possessions or gaining further insight into where they might be now
