Bernard Soriano Policy Deputy Director | State of California DMV
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is set to hold a public briefing on January 10, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. This virtual event will be conducted via Webex and aims to present insights and outcomes from the DMV's 2024 Mobile Driver’s License Hackathons.
Members of the public and media are invited to participate in this discussion, which requires prior registration. Interested individuals can sign up through the CA mDL Community Hackathon Public Briefing Registration.
The California mobile Driver’s License (mDL) is a digital version of a driver's license available through the California DMV Wallet app, Apple Wallet, and Google Wallet. It allows for secure identity verification at places like TSA airport security checks and convenience stores without needing a physical ID. As of January 2025, over one million Californians have adopted mDLs.
These hackathons have played a key role in exploring secure applications for the mDL that could benefit Californians in the future. The upcoming briefing will showcase successful use cases and solutions proposed during hackathons held in October and November 2024. It will also discuss how mDL enhances identity verification across various sectors and its potential integration into everyday services.
Presentations during the briefing will cover innovative proposals from both public and private sectors, technical considerations, user-centric perspectives, and insights from participating organizations. Attendees will learn about future steps in mDL adoption as well as planned new features for the California DMV Wallet.
The event is expected to draw participants from government agencies, private businesses, and technology innovators. Over 130 organizations have already registered, including representatives from U.S. state transportation agencies, federal agencies, international public bodies, major standard bodies, trade associations, and prominent technology providers.
