Californians who need to renew their permanent Disabled Person Parking Placard (DPPP) can now do so online, eliminating the need for a visit to the DMV office. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reaching out to nearly 260,000 customers who have held a placard for six years or more, requiring them to verify their continued need.

"We have made it easy for customers to renew their placards online," said DMV Director Steve Gordon. "During our last renewal cycle, nearly one million customers renewed using our new online service. We hope customers will continue to take advantage of this convenient renewal option this time around."

To provide an electronic signature, DPPP holders can scan the QR code on their paper notice or visit dmv.ca.gov/dpp if they don't have the notice available. Renewal instructions are also accessible on the DMV website. Alternatively, customers can sign and mail their paper renewal notice to the DMV, ensuring they include postage. All renewals must be completed before the current placard expires on June 30, 2025.

A law enacted in 2017 mandates that DPPP holders submit a signed renewal notice every six years. Previously, placards were automatically renewed every two years.

The DMV has expanded its digital services significantly, encouraging customers to use online platforms for most transactions instead of visiting an office. This includes eligible driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals. Customers can also utilize the Service Advisor tool on the DMV website for guidance on completing various tasks.

For those interested in receiving paperless notices for vehicle registration and driver’s license renewals, signing up requires creating a secure online account at dmv.ca.gov and opting in.
