DMV employees honored for life-saving acts through organ donation

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), in collaboration with Donate Life California, recognized three of its team members for their significant contributions to organ donation. Shannon Walling and Veronica Salas from Sacramento, along with Patricia Gardner from Oxnard, were acknowledged for their efforts and will be celebrated during the 2025 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena on January 1.

Shannon Walling paid tribute to her late husband, Jay Walling, who donated his corneas after his death in 2023. "Jay was a loving husband, stepfather, and a generous man," Shannon stated. "He would be proud to know his gift restored the sight of a veteran who now volunteers to help others." A floral portrait of Jay was unveiled at DMV headquarters and will feature on the Donate Life float titled “Let Your Life Soar.”

Veronica Salas shared her experience of donating a kidney to her father, Ontiveros “José” Salas. "My father instilled in me the importance of selflessness," she expressed. "Donating my kidney was a way to honor him and encourage others to consider becoming donors."

Patricia Gardner recounted how her kidney donation led to a six-person organ exchange that benefited several families. "Organ donation gave three families—including my own—the gift of more time with their loved ones," Patricia remarked. Both Veronica and Patricia will accompany the Donate Life float during the parade as representatives of living donors.

The theme for this year's Donate Life float is inspired by Japan’s Children’s Day and features vibrant koi-shaped flags symbolizing strength, courage, and health. Floragraphs honoring donors will decorate the float.

Since forming a partnership with Donate Life California in 2006, the DMV has registered over 19 million organ, eye, and tissue donors—95% through visits to DMV offices. Despite these efforts, there remains a significant need as each day adds approximately 150 people to the national organ transplant waiting list.
