State officials, local leaders, and private sector partners gathered in Mojave to mark the groundbreaking of Pacific Steel’s new steel mill. The Mojave Micro Mill is the first of its kind in California in over 50 years. This project is expected to create nearly 700 jobs and contribute significantly to economic development in Kern County.

Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “Projects like the Mojave Micro Mill show how we can grow our regional economies while simultaneously taking action on climate and improving public health – all key pillars of California Jobs First.”

The mill received a $30 million tax credit from the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development last year. In return, Pacific Steel committed to investing over $540 million and creating nearly 450 new jobs within five years.

Pacific Steel is collaborating with educational institutions such as California State University, Bakersfield, to provide pathways for employment in steel manufacturing careers.

The facility will dedicate 63 acres to renewable energy and incorporate advanced emissions reduction technologies. This aligns with California’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality while supporting local manufacturing for infrastructure projects.

California continues to lead in clean energy job creation, boasting more than half a million positions statewide. Governor Newsom remains focused on expanding climate-forward job opportunities as part of maintaining California’s economic growth.
