The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) is set to reopen to public travel this Friday, ahead of the initial schedule, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend. Governor Gavin Newsom announced that State Route 1 will be accessible to all drivers at 8 a.m. on May 23, following its closure due to the Palisades Fire.

Governor Newsom emphasized the swift reopening: “In California, we get stuff done, period. We’re opening the PCH back up early, with more lanes before Angelenos hit the road this Memorial Day.” The reopening was achieved through coordinated efforts involving construction crews and partners like the Army Corps of Engineers.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass highlighted the significance of this development for local recovery efforts: “The reopening of Pacific Coast Highway marks an important step forward in our recovery effort in the Palisades, which is on track to be the fastest in state history.” She noted that security measures would remain robust with increased LAPD deployment.

Efforts have been made by various agencies to ensure safety and expedite cleanup operations. Los Angeles City Councilwoman Traci Park stated, “I’m grateful to Governor Newsom and the State for their unwavering partnership in keeping the Pacific Palisades safe over the past four and a half months.”

State Senator Ben Allen acknowledged the impact on businesses: “The reopening of PCH is an important milestone that will relieve badly impacted businesses and help impacted communities get back on their feet.”

Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath stressed ongoing vigilance: “Safety remains our top priority. Our Sheriff’s Department will have elevated patrols to ensure that both our unincorporated communities and the City of Malibu receive the public safety support needed during this transition.”

Brigadier General William Hannan from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers commended his teams’ efforts: “This effort exemplifies our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and community resilience.”

Malibu Mayor Marianne Riggins remarked on continuing challenges while acknowledging progress: “While significant challenges remain, this development helps restore limited access for residents and travelers along the coast.”

Barbara Bruderlin from Malibu Pacific Palisades Chamber expressed optimism for local businesses: “Opening PCH will be like the sun finally rising after a long, dark night for Malibu’s remaining businesses.”

Santa Monica Chamber CEO Judy Kruger welcomed visitors back: “Easy access to our vibrant coastal community is critical for businesses to thrive now more than ever.”

Travelers are advised that repairs will continue post-reopening, with two lanes available in each direction. Drivers should exercise caution due to ongoing construction activities.
