The Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute (NMDSI) announced the addition of three new academic partners: the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), and Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC). The expansion aims to strengthen data science education and research in southeastern Wisconsin.
Formed in 2018, NMDSI is a partnership between Northwestern Mutual, Marquette University, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Its goal is to advance artificial intelligence (AI) and data science initiatives across academia and industry in the region. The institute supports research investments, training opportunities, academic programming, and talent development.
Tim Gerend, chairman, president, and CEO of Northwestern Mutual said, “We’re thrilled to welcome three outstanding academic institutions to the NMDSI that have made substantial advancements in the field of AI and data science. This expansion will result in significant knowledge sharing and greater institutional collaboration, which ultimately accelerates our efforts to develop the next generation of exceptional tech talent and future-ready leaders in Southeastern Wisconsin.”
With this partnership, MCW will contribute its data science curricula for research advancement. MSOE plans to provide access to its Rosie supercomputer for enhanced computational resources. WCTC will offer its Applied AI Lab for hands-on learning experiences.
These contributions are expected to enhance NMDSI’s offerings in data science education and research. Over seven years, NMDSI has supported programs such as faculty recruitment funding, seed funding for research projects, student scholarships, new degree programs, and curricula development. Since fall 2023, students have completed over 100 applied AI and data science research projects through the institute.
NMDSI also organizes events fostering collaboration among partner institutions within the technology community.
