Governor Gavin Newsom is set to host a press event in Sacramento alongside Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire, Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, and Texas Democratic lawmakers. The event comes as Texas Democrats break quorum in protest against congressional maps advanced by Texas Republicans and former President Donald Trump ahead of the 2026 election.

The meeting will focus on efforts to counter Republican-led gerrymandering. California leaders have discussed the possibility of a statewide ballot measure that would reaffirm the state’s commitment to independent redistricting. This measure could also allow voters to temporarily adjust California’s congressional map if states like Texas alter theirs for political advantage.

Governor Newsom and state officials will be joined by members of both the California State Senate and Assembly, as well as representatives from the Texas House. The event is scheduled for Friday, August 8 at approximately 2 p.m., with livestreams available on the Governor’s social media pages and access provided for TV stations via LiveU Matrix under “California Governor.”

Media attendance is limited to credentialed individuals who RSVP by 10 a.m. on August 8. Location details will be shared upon confirmation.

“While hosting Texas Democrats breaking quorum to defend democracy Governor Newsom and California leaders will discuss their efforts to counter Republican gerrymandering. The Governor and state leaders have floated a potential statewide ballot measure that would reaffirm California’s commitment to national independent redistricting and allow voters to temporarily adjust the state’s congressional map only if Texas or other GOP-led states manipulate theirs.”
