Residents in Northern Nevada affected by the Davis Fire evacuations may be eligible for cost reimbursement from their insurers, according to the Nevada Division of Insurance. The Division advises residents to keep receipts or records of evacuation-related expenses if they intend to file a claim.

The Division has communicated with major insurance carriers in the affected area. These carriers indicated that most homeowners, renters, and condo policies offer loss of use/additional living expense coverage for up to two weeks when the residence is unusable due to a civil, governmental, or military authority’s orders. Temporary housing and food allowances may be provided based on household size. Coverage specifics are reviewed individually and may include sublimits. Policyholders should review their policies or consult their brokers or agents for detailed information.

In emergencies, it is crucial for policyholders to know how to contact their insurance companies. Those under mandatory evacuation should inquire about their policy coverage and available resources during evacuation orders. Many homeowners are unaware that their home and renters’ insurance policies might cover evacuation and recovery fees.

Evacuees are encouraged by the Division to confirm additional living expense (ALE) provisions, limits, and eligibility conditions with their insurance companies. ALE can cover food and lodging costs, furniture rental, relocation and storage fees, and transportation charges. Policyholders should document conversations with insurance representatives including date, time, names of individuals spoken with, and details of the discussions.

Policyholders should also have copies of their policies readily available; photographing them for storage on a phone or smart device is recommended. Uploading these images to cloud storage ensures future access and verification. Health insurance documentation is also advised. Residents needing prescription medication refills can contact their pharmacists for replacements.
