Kin announced its inaugural 2026 Homeownership Trends Report, which found that 49% of U.S. homeowners have considered relocating because of climate-related concerns, while most also expect climate-driven home damage and higher insurance premiums.

According to the Kin press release, the findings are based on a national survey of 1,000 American homeowners, combined with insurance and housing market research. Nearly half of the respondents are considering relocation in 2026 due to climate concerns, with 93% expressing concern about potential damage in the next two to three years and 68% expecting more frequent extreme weather events. The report emphasizes rising costs impacting decisions, with 82% anticipating insurance premium increases mostly between 1-10%.

Florida ranks highest among states to avoid moving to because of extreme weather risks, with 58% of homeowners citing it as such, followed by California at 52%, according to Kin’s data. Homeowners in high-risk states face challenges from climate-driven concerns affecting relocation preferences and insurance availability. The survey suggests that a quarter of those considering moves plan to relocate to a different state entirely.

U.S. home prices have consistently increased over the past 14 years, with 80% of homeowners expecting further rises in home prices and repair and maintenance costs. Home insurance premiums rose by 24% between 2021 and 2024, exceeding inflation by 11%. Insurance costs now heavily influence homebuying decisions, with nearly half saying they weigh very heavily or seriously on these decisions. Interest rates remain a barrier as well; 74% require rates of 5% or lower to consider purchasing.
