Governor Brian P. Kemp, alongside First Lady Marty Kemp, presided over the inauguration of a new State Patrol Post at the Governor’s Mansion in Atlanta. Joining them were Speaker Jon Burns, Mayor Andre Dickens, and Department of Public Safety (DPS) Commissioner Col. Billy Hitchens. The 1,750-square-foot facility situated in the Buckhead community is a part of ongoing efforts to strengthen public safety.

Governor Kemp emphasized the collaborative approach that led to the facility’s opening, stating, “Keeping our communities safe is my top priority and today’s milestone would not have been possible without the leadership and support of our partners in the General Assembly.” He commended the contributions of the General Assembly, noting the historic decline in violent crime in Atlanta.

The creation of this post was facilitated by a $1.3 million allocation in the FY24 budget, supported unanimously by the General Assembly. Speaker Jon Burns remarked on this commitment: “Atlanta is stronger when Buckhead is safer, and that’s why the House was proud to invest over $1 million to support this new Georgia State Patrol post.”

Mayor Andre Dickens expressed readiness for collaboration, adding, “Effective public safety involves partnerships, coordination, and collaboration,” and affirmed the Atlanta Police Department’s commitment to work closely with the State Patrol.

The new facility accommodates approximately 35 Troopers, with 13 directly assigned, aiming to enhance security and accessibility in the area. Commissioner Col. Billy Hitchens highlighted the facility’s role in upholding Georgia’s traffic laws and reducing crime rates by stating, “The new POST, along with our partnership with the Atlanta Police Department, gives us a tremendous advantage against those who choose to break the law.”

The completion of the Georgia State Patrol Post was finalized in March 2025.
