Governor Brian P. Kemp has announced the latest grant awards for the Rural Workforce Housing Initiative, totaling $6.5 million to support infrastructure development and 198 housing units in three communities. The initiative, launched in 2023, continues to address workforce housing needs across Georgia.
Governor Kemp stated, “Every Georgian deserves to be able to live in the community where they work, and today’s announcement is just the latest reminder of our commitment to that idea.” He acknowledged legislative support for funding the initiative, which aims to benefit families statewide amid significant job growth. The grants are expected to impact Hawkinsville, Hinesville, and Waynesboro positively over time.
The Georgia General Assembly initially allocated $35.7 million for the program’s launch in 2023 and subsequently approved additional funds of $28 million and $6 million for fiscal years 2025 and 2026 respectively.
Christopher Nunn, Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs, emphasized community partnerships: “Through this important initiative, the OneGeorgia Authority continues to come alongside communities committed to growth and opportunity for their citizens.”
Recipients leveraged other funding sources alongside OneGeorgia Authority requirements to enhance access to affordable housing for workers. Grant funds must be utilized within a specified timeframe of generally 30 months from award date.
Specific awards include:
– City of Leesburg received $2.5 million for infrastructure improvements supporting a 66-unit development at 32 Crossing Subdivision.
– City of Greensboro was granted $2.5 million for similar improvements enabling a 32-home development at Baynes Creek.
– Joint Development Authority of Gilmer County with Ellijay and East Ellijay cities received $1.5 million for constructing infrastructure that will allow building 30 townhomes.
Each project involves contributions from developers and local authorities with zoning approvals already secured.
