Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a series of bills into law, affecting various sectors including housing, education, health care, and environmental conservation. Among the newly enacted laws are AB 598 by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland), which focuses on regional and county expenditure plans for the San Francisco Bay Area Regional Housing Finance Act; AB 810 by Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) addressing hiring practices in postsecondary education; and AB 846 by Assemblymember Mia Bonta (D-Oakland) concerning rent increases in housing programs.

Additional legislation includes AB 863 by Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D-Winters) on carpet recycling, AB 892 by Assemblymember Dr. Jasmeet Bains (D-Bakersfield) regarding Kern County Hospital Authority, and AB 1205 by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda), which aims to support California State University students through the California Promise program.

The Governor also signed several bills related to public safety and health such as AB 1976 by Assemblymember Matt Haney (D-San Francisco), mandating opioid antagonists as part of first aid materials for occupational safety standards, and SB 552 by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), focusing on pool and spa safety.

In addition to signing new laws, Governor Newsom vetoed a number of bills. These include AB 359 by Assemblymember Chris R. Holden (D-Pasadena) concerning dual enrollment pathways partnerships in pupil instruction; AB 871 by Assemblymember Matt Haney (D-San Francisco) related to employment safety; and SB 254 by Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley), which would have affected media access to correctional facilities.

“These measures represent significant progress in addressing critical issues facing our state,” said Governor Newsom. “I am grateful to the legislators for their dedication to improving the lives of Californians.”
