The Delta Conveyance Design and Construction Authority (DCA) Board of Directors has expressed its support for Governor Newsom’s legislative proposals aimed at expediting the Delta Conveyance Project. This project is seen as a vital step in addressing California’s water infrastructure needs and adapting to climate change.
During a special meeting, the DCA Board unanimously voted to back the legislative effort, with plans to send formal letters of support to Governor Newsom. Martin Milobar, President of the DCA Board, stated, “I want to thank Governor Newsom for his continued leadership in prioritizing California’s water future.” He emphasized the importance of modernizing water management systems in California.
Graham Bradner, Executive Director of the DCA, highlighted the urgency of the project in light of climate change and seismic risks. He noted that proposed reforms could save years and potentially billions by removing unnecessary hurdles. “We stand ready and offer our strong support to the Governor’s forward-thinking approach,” he said.
Support for the project extends across various sectors. Jennifer Pierre from State Water Contractors remarked on reducing barriers to innovation. Deven Upadhyay from Metropolitan Water District emphasized how the proposal could expedite planning by eliminating administrative hurdles.
Community leaders also voiced their approval. Jennifer Barrera from California Chamber of Commerce described modernizing California’s water supply as “vital” and long overdue. Rick Callender from NAACP acknowledged the impact on disadvantaged communities, while Joe Cruz from California State Council of Laborers highlighted job creation benefits.
The Delta Conveyance Project aims to enhance water supply reliability while maintaining environmental protections. Despite some progress, it faces regulatory challenges that Governor Newsom seeks to address through streamlined processes.
