Governor Gavin Newsom has declared May 22, 2025, as “Harvey Milk Day” in California. The proclamation honors Harvey Milk, a prominent figure in the fight for LGBTQ rights and equality. Born on May 22, 1930, Milk became an influential leader in San Francisco’s LGBTQ community and was one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States.

Milk’s political career began with his election to San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors in 1977. His tenure was marked by his advocacy for anti-discrimination laws and improved community services. Tragically, Milk’s life was cut short when he was assassinated just a year into his term.

Governor Newsom’s proclamation highlights Milk’s enduring legacy and commitment to equality. It states: “Today, we honor Harvey Milk – a hero for not just his own community, but for every Californian fighting for freedom and equality.” Despite facing threats and prejudice, Milk remained steadfast in his mission to serve the LGBTQ community and all San Franciscans.

The proclamation emphasizes that California continues to support the LGBTQ community amidst ongoing challenges. It concludes with Governor Newsom affirming the state’s dedication to “equality, freedom, and acceptance for all.”

The official document bears Governor Newsom’s signature alongside Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber’s attestation.
