Governor Gavin Newsom has officially declared March 20, 2025, as Nowrūz Day in California. The proclamation acknowledges the cultural significance of Nowrūz, which is celebrated by millions worldwide as both a new year and the start of spring. This tradition has been observed for over 3,000 years during the vernal equinox.

The celebration of Nowrūz is described as transcending borders and religions, focusing on nature’s renewal and bringing together family and friends. A key aspect of the festivities is the “haft-seen” table, which includes seven symbolic items starting with the letter “s”: somagh (sumac berries), senjed (dried lotus tree fruit), serkeh (vinegar), seeb (apples), samanoo (sweet pudding), sabzeh (sprouts), and sir (garlic).

Governor Newsom highlighted California’s vibrant Iranian community, noting its significant contribution to the state’s diverse cultural landscape. He mentioned that many Iranians in the U.S. reside in California, with Los Angeles hosting the largest Iranian community outside Iran. The area known as “Tehrangeles” serves as a thriving cultural hub established by Persian residents and businesses.

In his proclamation, Governor Newsom encouraged all Californians to join in celebrating Nowrūz alongside their Iranian neighbors and others from various backgrounds. He emphasized embracing its message of living harmoniously with nature and each other.

The proclamation was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on March 20, 2024, with Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber attesting.
