Governor Gavin Newsom has been appointed as co-chair of the U.S. Climate Alliance, a bipartisan group comprising 24 governors focused on achieving net-zero carbon emissions in America through state-led climate initiatives. Governor Newsom will share leadership duties with Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and will be part of the alliance’s executive committee, which is responsible for guiding the coalition’s strategic direction.

Governor Newsom expressed his commitment to advancing climate goals, stating, “Americans want cleaner air and water, lower costs, and healthier communities — and that’s exactly what Alliance governors are delivering. As the federal government retreats from the climate fight, states are charging ahead. We were built to lead in moments like this, and as co-chair of this coalition, I look forward to partnering with my fellow governors to keep America on track.”

The U.S. Climate Alliance represents nearly 60% of the nation’s economy and encompasses 55% of its population. Governors Newsom and Evers were chosen by coalition members for a one-year term as co-chairs. The executive committee also includes New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Delaware Governor Matt Meyer, and Washington Governor Bob Ferguson.

This appointment follows an earlier announcement by Governor Newsom in March regarding his role as co-chair of “America Is All In,” another initiative supporting subnational climate efforts involving diverse leaders from various sectors.
