Governor Gavin Newsom has declared March 17-23, 2025, as United States Navy Week in California. This announcement comes as the Navy celebrates its 250th anniversary, a significant milestone marking a quarter-millennium of service and security.

The proclamation highlights California’s critical role in national defense, hosting Naval Base San Diego, the primary homeport for the Pacific Fleet. The state is home to over 48,321 active-duty sailors, more than 7,385 Navy reservists, and over 64,538 retirees.

Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of the U.S. Navy in ensuring global trade security. “Ninety percent of global trade moves by sea – and the United States Navy is instrumental in ensuring the safety and security of critical resources and goods,” he stated. This includes $158.7 billion in annual exports from California.

Sacramento has been selected as one of 15 cities to host a Navy Week this year. Governor Newsom encourages Californians to reflect on the vital role played by the U.S. Navy both locally and globally during this week.

The proclamation was signed on March 16, 2025, with Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber attesting.
