Governor Gavin Newsom has declared December 7, 2024, as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. This proclamation marks the 83rd anniversary of the attack by Imperial Japan on the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. The attack resulted in over 2,400 American casualties and significant damage to the Pacific Fleet.
The governor’s proclamation reflects on the sacrifices made by those who defended Pearl Harbor and all service members who served in battlefields worldwide. Governor Newsom emphasized remembering these sacrifices and honoring those who have fought for freedom.
“On this day 83 years ago, Imperial Japan launched an unprovoked attack on the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor,” Newsom stated in his proclamation. He also highlighted President Roosevelt’s response to the attack, noting that December 7, 1941, was described as a “date which will live in infamy.”
The proclamation calls for reflection on sacrifice and heroism while paying tribute to American heroes who lost their lives for a safer world.
The document was signed by Governor Newsom on November 4, 2024, with Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber attesting.
