Governor Gavin Newsom has issued a proclamation designating April 2025 as Autism Acceptance Month. California is joining global communities in emphasizing the importance of recognizing individuals with autism. The proclamation states, “We celebrate the many ways autistic individuals add to the diversity and strength of our state, while raising awareness of the challenges faced by children, teens, and adults on the autism spectrum in living to their full potential.”

Statistics reveal one in 22 children in California are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The state’s 21 regional centers offer developmental services to over 194,000 autistic individuals. Governor Newsom highlighted the contributions of these individuals, saying, “We are proud to honor the many individuals with autism enriching our communities with their perspectives, talents, and achievements.”

The proclamation also referenced the Master Plan for Developmental Services released by California’s Health and Human Services Agency. It provides recommendations for addressing the increasing caseloads at regional centers and outlines support for individuals with developmental disabilities like autism. This plan aims to guide the state’s efforts in enhancing services, indicating California’s “commitment to supporting, empowering, and celebrating people on the autism spectrum.”

Governor Newsom expressed gratitude to those dedicated to advocating for autistic individuals: “This Autism Acceptance Month, we share our deep appreciation of individuals, families, and many others who are dedicated to uplifting the experiences of autistic people.” He reaffirmed the commitment to foster inclusive communities stating, “Together, we will continue to build communities where everyone belongs.”

Governor Newsom concluded the proclamation with the statement: “NOW THEREFORE I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim April 2025, as ‘Autism Acceptance Month.'”

The proclamation was signed on April 1, 2025, and attested by Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., Secretary of State.
