Get Covered Illinois has announced an extension for the first open enrollment deadline, allowing residents until December 31 to sign up for health insurance coverage that will begin on January 1. The move comes as Illinois transitions to operating its own state-based marketplace, separate from the federal HealthCare.gov platform.
This year is the first time Get Covered Illinois is managing an independent state marketplace. Officials say this local control allows them to better address the needs of residents. “Shifting to a state-based marketplace has given Illinois the authority and flexibility to make decisions that put our residents first,” said Morgan Winters, Director of Get Covered Illinois. “This enrollment deadline extension is exactly the kind of customer-focused action that we could not take as a federally facilitated marketplace. By running our own marketplace, we can improve access, expand support, and give Illinoisans more time to get covered.”
The extension aims to provide more time for individuals and families to receive assistance, compare available plans, and select coverage options that fit their needs and budgets. This additional window comes at a time when some insurers are leaving the market and premiums are rising, creating uncertainty for many customers who may need to consider different plan options or metal levels.
All plans offered through Get Covered Illinois include essential health benefits such as prescription drugs, mental health services, pediatric care, emergency services, free preventive care, among others. Residents who wish their coverage to start on January 1 must enroll by December 31.
Assistance with enrollment is available in multiple formats: in-person support, phone consultations, or help from certified navigators or brokers across the state. The Customer Assistance Center provides help in over 250 languages and has extended hours during open enrollment.
Get Covered Illinois operates under the Illinois Department of Insurance and helps people find affordable health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.
