Sacramento, California – Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis has issued a proclamation declaring July 2025 as Disability Pride Month in California. The announcement highlights the state’s recognition of the contributions of individuals with disabilities and aligns with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law on July 26, 1990.

The ADA, sponsored by California Congressman Tony Coelho, prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities across various public domains. California is home to over 7 million adults with disabilities and provides services to one in eight children with disabilities in schools.

Governor Kounalakis emphasized California’s role in promoting inclusion and integration for people with disabilities. She noted ongoing efforts by the Newsom Administration, in partnership with the Legislature, to expand opportunities in education, employment, health care access, civil rights, and community living for people of all ages with disabilities.

“California joins communities around the nation in recognizing July as Disability Pride Month,” stated Acting Governor Kounalakis. “As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, let us reflect on the essential contributions of people with disabilities to our communities, our state, and our nation.”

The proclamation also reaffirms California’s commitment to accessibility and employment opportunities within state services for individuals with disabilities.

“NOW THEREFORE I, ELENI KOUNALAKIS, Acting Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim July 2025 as ‘Disability Pride Month,'” declared Kounalakis.
