Gilberto Contreras has admitted guilt in a case involving the possession and intent to distribute nearly 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine. The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie, Jr., who highlighted the significant threat these drugs posed to community health and safety. Moultrie expressed gratitude for the work of federal and local law enforcement partners in addressing this issue.
Acting Special Agent Jae Chung of the DEA Atlanta Division emphasized the agency’s commitment to holding accountable those involved in distributing dangerous drugs like methamphetamine.
According to court information presented by Acting U.S. Attorney Moultrie, on July 2, 2024, DEA special agents were tipped off about a local methamphetamine trafficker with multiple kilograms for sale. This led them to a parking lot in Clayton County, Georgia, where they encountered Contreras. A subsequent vehicle stop revealed approximately 44 pounds of methamphetamine in a black trash bag. Further searches at Contreras’s residence and backyard in Ellenwood, Georgia uncovered around 915 pounds of methamphetamine and $40,000 in cash.
Gilberto Contreras, aged 54 from Ellenwood, Georgia, is due for sentencing on May 13, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Thomas W. Thrash, Jr.
The investigation is being conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration with assistance from the Clayton County Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dwayne A. Brown, Jr. is handling prosecution duties.
