California has significantly expanded its battery storage capacity, reaching over 15,700 megawatts (MW), a milestone reflecting the state’s progress in energy transformation under Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration. This marks a substantial increase from 770 MW in 2019, representing a growth of 1,944%.

Battery storage plays a crucial role in California’s energy strategy by capturing power from renewable sources like wind and solar and discharging it during peak demand periods. Governor Newsom highlighted the importance of this development: “California is adding battery storage at a pace never seen before as we continue our work to build the grid of the future. The key to a cleaner, more reliable power grid is batteries – and no other jurisdiction on the planet, save China, comes even close to our rapid deployment.”

The state aims for more than 48,000 MW of battery storage and an additional 4,000 MW of long-duration storage by 2045. Long-duration systems can provide up to ten hours of power compared to traditional four-hour systems.

Efforts are underway to enhance safety measures for utility-scale battery systems through state-level collaborations and regulatory updates. Recent initiatives include new safety standards by the California Public Utilities Commission and anticipated updates to the California Fire Code with enhanced safety standards for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Governor Newsom has emphasized infrastructure upgrades as part of his agenda, which includes creating jobs across California while addressing climate change challenges. The state’s greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by 20% since 2000 while its GDP increased by 78%. Last year alone saw California operating on clean electricity equivalent to running on it for 51 days.
