Governor Gavin Newsom has approved a request from Los Angeles County to deploy the California National Guard to assist law enforcement efforts in response to the ongoing wildfires in Southern California. This deployment increases the total number of personnel on the ground to 8,000, working alongside local and federal partners.
The CalGuard servicemembers are joining an unprecedented effort to combat hurricane-force wind-driven wildfires. Governor Newsom emphasized, “Thanks to the incredible work of our first responders and emergency personnel, we’re throwing everything at our disposal – including our National Guard servicemembers – to protect communities in the days to come. And to those who would seek to take advantage of evacuated communities, let me be clear: looting will not be tolerated.”
These Military Police Forces will be stationed at traffic control points and will support local law enforcement by enhancing their capacity in respective areas.
Firefighters have made progress against several fires, with the Lidia Fire now 60% contained and the Sunset Fire impacting Hollywood Hills being fully contained. The state’s comprehensive response involves coordination through the State Operation Center with CAL FIRE leading efforts alongside various partners.
Currently, 6,200 firefighting personnel are engaged with over 1,030 pieces of equipment deployed. State law enforcement is collaborating with multiple agencies for public safety and infrastructure support. Efforts include mobilizing Caltrans personnel for debris clearance and handling power outages, deploying California Highway Patrol officers for roadway closures, and integrating CalGuard members into firefighting operations.
In addition to fire suppression efforts, California is ensuring access to critical services for residents affected by these disasters. The California Department of Social Services is partnering with Los Angeles County to provide essential benefits like food assistance. Seven shelters remain open accommodating over 1,500 people.
The California Department of Public Health is coordinating evacuations from health facilities while managing patient transfers safely. Furthermore, steps are being taken by Californians to mitigate health risks from wildfire smoke exposure.
As weather conditions continue to pose threats with potential rapid fire spread due to strong winds forecasted by the National Weather Service, residents are urged to stay informed via official resources such as fire.ca.gov and ready.ca.gov for updates and safety tips.
