Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the substantial completion of debris removal from over 10,000 fire-damaged parcels in Los Angeles, marking the fastest major disaster cleanup in American history. This announcement comes six months after the Eaton and Palisades fires. Governor Newsom has also signed an executive order to expedite the rebuilding of homes and schools.

The LA Fires cleanup operation, managed by Cal OES and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with support from FEMA, cleared 9,195 properties as part of California’s Consolidated Debris Removal Program. Crews removed over 2.5 million tons of debris, equivalent to twice the amount removed from Ground Zero after 9/11.

A new blueprint for recovery has been unveiled to accelerate rebuilding efforts and provide support to affected families. The executive order suspends local permitting laws and building codes to fast-track reconstruction.

The progress made is attributed to coordination among city, county, state, and federal partners. As recovery continues, there is a focus on addressing community needs for reconstruction and providing affordable housing for those displaced.

U.S. Senator Alex Padilla emphasized the need for additional federal disaster assistance for California. Senator Adam Schiff highlighted the urgency brought to cleanup efforts by California’s leaders. U.S. Representative Judy Chu expressed gratitude for Governor Newsom’s partnership in seeking further federal aid.

Local officials have praised Governor Newsom’s leadership in recovery efforts. Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger acknowledged the fast-paced cleanup as unprecedented. Mayor Karen Bass recognized collaboration across various levels of government in leading recovery efforts.

The State of California deployed significant resources before and during the fires to facilitate a rapid response and recovery process. Federal support was secured early on through coordination with both outgoing President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

By focusing on cutting red tape, providing tax relief, protecting tenants, directing immediate state relief, safeguarding survivors from price gouging, supporting small businesses and workers, California aims to rebuild Los Angeles faster and stronger following this natural disaster.
