In anticipation of the upcoming peak fire season, California has launched a comprehensive wildfire preparedness campaign. CAL FIRE is leading the initiative to encourage residents to adopt proactive measures to protect their homes and communities from the increasing wildfire threats. The campaign was initiated following Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent declaration of a state of emergency aimed at expediting essential projects to bolster community defenses against wildfires.

The year 2025 has already witnessed significant wildfires, including the Eaton and Palisades fires in Los Angeles, the second and third most destructive in California’s history. Governor Newsom emphasized the ongoing threat when saying, “The Los Angeles fires are a stark reminder of the year-round threat wildfire poses for our communities. As we head into peak fire season, we’re ramping up efforts to communicate with those in areas where preparedness measures like home hardening and defensible space can save lives. Now is the time to prepare your home and property.”

The state’s preparedness campaign highlights the importance of “home hardening” and creating “defensible space.” Residents will encounter an array of promotional materials, from digital advertisements to posters, aiming to spread awareness in areas at risk of wildfires. These outreach materials are available in English and Spanish to ensure broad accessibility.

Home hardening involves upgrading to fire-resistant roofing, siding, and sealing gaps larger than 1/8 inch to block embers. Meanwhile, creating defensible space requires maintaining a 5-foot ember-resistant zone around homes and keeping flammable materials, like propane tanks and firewood, stored at least 30 feet away from structures.

Governor Newsom has allocated unprecedented resources to enhance the state’s wildfire response and prevention capabilities. This includes expanding CAL FIRE’s budget to $4 billion, augmenting aerial firefighting resources, and incorporating advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and satellite monitoring.

CAL FIRE provides a tool called firePLANNER through their website ReadyForWildfire.org to assist residents. This online resource helps Californians construct a tailored wildfire readiness strategy complete with checklists, safety tips, and timely updates.

Citizens are urged to begin their preparations by focusing on their homes. As the Governor has noted, this early action could significantly increase the chances of homes surviving the imminent fire threats.
