The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced the relocation of its Driver Safety Office (DSO) in San Francisco. The current office at 1377 Fell St., 2nd Floor, will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, February 21. The new location at 395 Oyster Point Blvd., Suite 321, South San Francisco will open at 8 a.m. on Monday, February 24.
This move is part of the DMV’s efforts to enhance efficiency and better serve customer needs as it continues its digital transformation. DSOs handle administrative hearings for drivers facing potential suspensions or restrictions due to negligence, alcohol-related incidents, or health issues. They also conduct driving re-examinations related to safety or health concerns but do not offer services like driver’s license applications or vehicle registration renewals.
The DMV has introduced a new Case Management System (CMS) aimed at streamlining processes and reducing costs while improving overall operations. This system allows drivers and their attorneys to schedule hearings, check case statuses, and understand requirements for reinstating suspended licenses more conveniently without needing to call or visit an office.
Hearings are by appointment only and can be scheduled online or by calling the DMV during business hours at 1-833-543-7703.
The DMV encourages customers to utilize online services for most tasks that do not require an office visit. Simple transactions are now available through digital platforms rather than in person. Customers can use the Service Advisor on the DMV website to explore options for completing various tasks.
To receive paperless notices for vehicle registration and driver’s license renewals, customers need to create a secure online account and register at dmv.ca.gov.
