AmeriCorps is a federal agency crucial for supporting volunteer and service activities. The federal government has been reducing its programs, prompting California to enhance recruiting for its California Service Corps. This corps is now the largest in the nation, exceeding the Peace Corps in size.
Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of service, stating that California is suing to protect service members and the communities they assist. The administration’s actions are viewed as a threat to both funding and community values.
The lawsuit argues that the Trump administration, via the Department of Government Employment (DOGE), is closing down AmeriCorps and ending states’ support for these programs by canceling grants and reducing the workforce. Attorney General Bonta noted that AmeriCorps volunteers address critical issues such as affordable housing and food insecurity in California.
In 2024, AmeriCorps engaged over 6,150 members across multiple locations, including schools and health clinics. These efforts were crucial during the Los Angeles fires, where members aided in distributing supplies and supporting affected families.
Josh Fryday, GO-Serve Director, declared that California would fight against what he called an illegal move to undermine service efforts. California plans to intensify its programs, confident the courts will uphold these initiatives.
California Service Corps comprises four paid service programs: CaliforniansForAll College Corps, California Climate Action Corps, Youth Service Corps, and AmeriCorps California. These programs are integral in addressing academic recovery, fire rebuilding, and workforce planning post-pandemic.
In the 2023-24 service year, California AmeriCorps members provided millions of service hours, assisted thousands of students and foster youth, and participated in environmental activities. This active support underlines the state’s commitment, disrupted by the recent federal measures.
