Millions of Americans relocated last year, with Arkansas emerging as the top destination, according to a study by Atlas Van Lines. The report tracked migration patterns from November 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024.

Heather Keenen, owner of Heather Keenen Real Estate in Lincoln, AR, attributes this trend to the state’s affordability and other factors. “We have one of the lowest costs of living in America,” she said. “Couple that with tax cuts and low crime rates, and we are continuing to see an influx daily.” She noted that Northwest Arkansas is experiencing significant growth due to its strong job market and cultural appeal.

States without a state income tax also attracted many newcomers. Holden Andrews, founder of Helpful Home Group, commented on this trend: “I think the state of the economy was a big influencer in these decisions to relocate to states without income tax.”

Atlas Van Lines’ study revealed diverse reasons for moving. While only 10% moved for affordability reasons, 32% relocated for new jobs and 25% did so to be closer to family or friends.

The top ten states attracting new residents include Arkansas at number one, followed by Rhode Island, North Carolina, Washington D.C., Idaho, Tennessee, Maine, Connecticut, Washington State, and Alaska.

Below are details about each state’s largest metro area housing statistics:

1. Arkansas: Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway has a median listing price of $285,000.
2. Rhode Island: Providence-Warwick’s median listing price is $539,900.
3. North Carolina: Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia has a median listing price of $428,750.
4. Washington D.C.: Washington-Arlington-Alexandria’s median listing price is $585,000.

9. Washington State: Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue’s median listing price is $740,000.
10. Alaska: Anchorage’s median listing price is $450,000.

These states offer varying levels of affordability combined with job opportunities or remote work options which make them appealing choices for relocation.
