Winter holidays present some of the most hazardous driving conditions, according to the new Allstate Holiday Driver Report released on December 10, 2025. The report analyzes claims data, trip patterns, and roadside events to provide insight into winter driving risks across the United States.

Allstate Safety Expert Brian Tidwell said, “Winter driving risks can change overnight. Whether you’re staying local or traveling long distances, the Allstate mobile app offers helpful tools for everyone – not just Allstate customers – including Drivewise, Allstate Roadside and crash detection.”

The report highlights that cities typically known for safe driving can become high-risk during winter months. For example, Madison, Wisconsin’s ranking drops from ninth to 137th place between November and March. Several Florida cities also see significant declines in their safety rankings during this period.

The study notes that increased risk is not only due to snow and ice but also factors such as lack of preparation and changes in seasonal traffic. Warm-weather states like Arizona, Florida, and Texas experience a surge in out-of-state drivers during the holidays—rising by up to nearly 100% compared to normal levels—which leads to unfamiliar routes and heavier congestion.

To help mitigate these risks, Allstate recommends using its mobile app features such as crash detection and Drivewise. These tools provide immediate assistance after collisions and offer personalized feedback aimed at improving driver behavior.

Breakdowns are another concern during the winter holidays. The company reports one of its highest spikes in roadside assistance requests during this time due to issues like dead batteries and flat tires. Tidwell advises drivers: “Cold weather can turn minor issues into major problems. Check your battery, inspect your tires, top off fluids, keep your gas tank at least half full, and pack an emergency kit – a little preparation now can help you avoid big headaches later.”

Allstate encourages all drivers—not just policyholders—to download its mobile app for real-time safety features throughout the winter season.
